We get asked all the time, “What is the difference between Aluminized and Stainless Steel exhausts?” Well it really a simple answer that can help you select the perfect exhaust system for your Diesel pickup.First, there really is no performance difference between the two material; some might argue that Stainless steel systems sound different, but this really is just a person’s personal opinion and varies from person to person. Here is a quick and dirty overview.
The Aluminized exhaust system are steel exhaust pipes with an exterior coating of aluminum and silicon to help prevent oxidization of the pipes. This translates to they cost less and aren’t as shiny and even though they are protected, they will eventually fall victim to the elements and begin to rust. But before you reject this type of material; understand that this can take decades and relies on many factors.
Stainless Steel exhaust systems come in two different forms 409 and 304 stainless steel. A 304 stainless system contains more nickel and chromium elements; helping the exhaust system resist rusting. Exhaust systems made of 409 stainless steel are still rust resistant and will be more durable then an Aluminized exhaust system, but neither 304 or 409 stainless exhaust systems are completely rust proof; only more durable and resistant to the elements.
To select the right system, ask yourself these questions. How long do I plan on keeping my diesel pickup? If more than 5 years, it’s suggested that you invest in a stainless steel system to prevent fatigue caused by long term exposure to harmful elements. Do you live or expose your diesel truck to harsh environments? This can include Humidity, sand, water or rough terrain that can cause damage to the coating of an aluminized exhaust system. Finally, do you care if your exhaust system is dull or does it need to be shiny? Some people just like the look of a shiny exhaust and want people to admire it. Hey, we see nothing wrong with this.
